Since IPS and filtering vendors searching for ways to detect a new version of Skype that is more stealthy than previous releases. With Skype 3.0 Beta their fears have received confirmation. As expected, the client has been re-engineered to make its presence on network traffic even tougher to spot, according to leading Skype-blocking outfit iPoque. There are certain alterations such as: a change to the way the client opens encrypted UDP channels to other clients, as well as to the packet lengths themselves. Also Skype has suffered changes in a way that no it is less likely that intrusion prevention systems unable to properly identify Skype would classify its traffic as “bad” by lowering the number of TCP connections the client attempts to open. This would avoid triggering TCP thresholds set on such systems, said iPoque CEO Klaus Mochalski. Germany-based iPoque markets hardware-based systems for detecting and blocking a range of unauthorized software from use on corporate networks, including Skype and notorious P2P systems such as BitTorrent. The good news for companies like iPoque is that Skype 3.0 must be compatible with easier to detect previous versions of its software. This IT enterprise cat-and-mouse game is going for quite some time now and probably will go on with every newer and stealthier Skype release.
