The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in Oman has decided to ban illegal VoIP providers throughout the cyber cafes in the country. The step is to assert that only the incumbent Omantel has the legal right to provide IP telephony services in the country. The violation of the news Oman order could end up with a fine reaching $130, 000 or two years in prison. The awareness arose because of the increasing number of foreign companies offering their free or low cost VoIP services through cyber cafes. Recently India has banned unlicensed VoIP services like Skype, Vonage, Yahoo!, Net2Phone, Dialpad, Impetus, Novanet and Euros, and call centers using services from such providers will be closed down.
